on Jan. 26th, Alexee Trevizo came into the emergency room at Artesia General Hospital complaining of lower back pain but told staff she had regular periods and didn’t have sex. Lab work determined Trevizo was pregnant, and she locked herself in a bathroom.

According to the police report, hospital staff informed the police that they obtained keys from security and, upon entering the bathroom after Trevizo had left, discovered a significant amount of blood. Initially, they were unable to locate the baby. However, approximately forty minutes later, a housekeeper cleaning the blood-stained bathroom made a grim discovery—a baby boy, already deceased, inside a tied-up trash bag in the trash can.

The hospital immediately called the police. The employees informed the police that a girl had secretly given birth in the restroom without notifying anyone. At that time, Trevizo was being airlifted to a hospital in Roswell for medical treatment.

Alexee Trevizo faced charges that included an open count of murder, child abuse resulting in death, and tampering with evidence in connection to the tragic demise of the infant on January 27th.

As per the police statement, Trevizo told doctors that the baby was not breathing upon delivery and she was panicked and did not know what to do, resulting in her decision to place the baby in a bag. However, the autopsy revealed that the baby had been born alive, and the cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation due to the lack of air after being placed inside the trash bag. Police charged and arrested Trevizo with first-degree murder on May 10th.

However, Trevizo’s attorney, Gary Mitchell, said The case involves more intricate details than simply a young woman abandoning a newborn and committing child abuse. He called this “a horrific case of a young person who goes for help to the right place — the place in that community she should be at. She went there for help, and this is the result?”

Later, a judge ruled to release Alexee Trevizo, who will get to finish the school year. She also won’t have to wear an ankle monitor and won’t be under house arrest while awaiting trial. She faces a possible sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted.
