With an impressive rating of 16.2%, “Doctor Cha,” a Korean drama produced by Netflix and belonging to the comedy-medical genre, has been garnering a considerable following among viewers. The plot of the series centers around Cha Jeong Suk, an U50 housewife who, despite having dedicated her youth to making sacrifices for her husband and children, is not valued nor respected. Following a health crisis, she resolves to prioritize her well-being and embarks on a journey to pursue her unfinished aspiration of becoming a family doctor. I. Netflix Doctor Cha plot review

Cha Jeong Suk is married to Seo In Ho, a surgeon at a university hospital. Cha Jeong Suk gave up her medical degree to become a housewife, wholeheartedly taking care of the family, to become a caring, selfless wife and mother who sacrifices much for her family. Jeong Suk and In Ho have two children, the eldest son is first year resident, and the daughter is in high school. It seems that Jeong Suk has a perfect life when having successful husband who brings home loads of money, and two beautiful children. However, it’s just the floating part of an iceberg, her life is not like a dream. Her husband, Seo In Ho, uses the excuse of being busy with surgeries to sleep separately and is cold to her, her mother-in-law often causes difficulties, and the two children are heartless.

When Jeong Suk experience death with a liver failure, she realizes how fed up she is living on her family’s terms. Jeon Suk decides she must get her life back by changing her behavior, going on shopping sprees, leaving chores undone, and bitting back at her selfish egotistical husband. The biggest move of Jeong Suk is when she decides to apply for residency to get her doctor licence, a field she left 20 years ago to devote to her family.

The show expedited after news of Seo In Ho’s affair surfaced, causing a rift within the family. The son, who had once aspired to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a revered doctor, now holds nothing but disdain towards In Ho. Even his biological mother chastises him, declaring that he has lost all semblance of respect as a man of the household. As for Jeong Suk, she comes to the heartbreaking decision to move out and file for divorce In Ho.

Then there are the days when Jeong Suk tries to build her place in the hospital, In Ho tries to regain Jeong Suk’s love, especially when he discovers that the handsome young doctor Roy Kim is also very into her.

II. Doctor Cha: is it worth streaming?

The movie “Doctor Cha” quickly won the hearts of viewers with the choice of the main character as a U50 housewife, recreating a common reality in Korean culture when women sacrifice their careers to take care of the family, but not valued by their husband and children. And of course, the journey of the desperated housewife to get her life and her career back.

The performance of actors also makes the show worth watching. Actress Uhm Jung Hwa has excellently portrayed the character of Cha Jeong Suk as a housewife who wholeheartedly sacrifices for her family, and is equally astute, fierce when pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor, and how strong she is when dealing with her husband’s infidelity. She definitely wins the supports of the audiences wanting her to thrive more than anything.

On the other hand, Kim Byung Chul perfectly potrayed Seo In ho, a selfist and egotistical husband. How he cowardly runs after his affair is discovered causes hates from viewers which proves how well he is as the character.

It is definitely worth streaming. Doctor Cha reels its audience in with a tantalizing mini-cliffhanger, leaving viewers eager to delve deeper into the unfolding story. The first episode alone is enough to pique one’s interest and compel them to continue on to the next.
